1st Day of School

A long overdue post on the 1st day of school. The kids were very excited, especially Amanda, about the 1st day of school. Coming in mid-year was tough, especially on Tanner, so he was looking forward to starting from the beginning of the school year - not trying to play catch-up. School starts at 8am, with the bus picking them up at 7:35am, and ends at 3:20pm. Orientation for the kids was held a week before the start of school, September 1st. After meeting all the teachers, I felt (and still do), that this year is going to be a good one!
The day before school started, I began getting worried - how will Amanda find her classroom from the bus, will Amanda remember which building her classroom is in (Concordia has 3 buildings -elementary, middle, & high school).... School here is much more relaxed, sometimes that can be a good thing but not on the first day of school. The only school the kids have ever attended was Orion Oaks. The routine was the same - the Kindergarten teachers would meet the students outside on the first day of school (plus I drove the kids to school which meant I could make sure they went to the right teacher). Not the case here - strike one. The bus monitors walk the kids off the bus but that is as far as it goes - which building should I pick, was the voice of Amanda's I was hearing in my head - strike two. With already having two strikes, I wasn't going to try to think of strike three....so the decision was made, I was taking the kids to school on the first day! With the whole one car dilemma, that meant Ron was stuck going with us or going into work really early - he opted to go with us - good daddy! The first day of school is always a bit of a rush as we are trying to get into a routine that we have been out of for some time. In between getting the kids ready, I was trying to get myself ready. Surely I couldn't go to school looking disheveled or not 'done up', especially when I haven't seen many folks since school ended. Finally, pictures taken, off we go! We said goodbye to Tanner outside as he goes to the middle school building. We walked Justin to the second floor & sent him on his way to the fourth floor (poor guy having to walk up all those stairs multiple times daily). Now to Amanda's classroom. She got settled in quickly & we got a few minutes to catch up with a few folks, meet some new one's & learn more about her teacher (she lived in Ann Arbor, still has a house there! - Go Blue!). Drop off done, time to go home & prepare for a new year of firsts, the start of scheduling, new friends & I'm sure, plenty of adventures. Ron dropped me off at home, which was an interesting drive (pictures below) & then headed into work. I was going to breakfast with a bunch of Mom's to celebrate (mourn for me) the first day of school. When I got home I sighed as we had pulled it all off...then I looked in the mirror to see that I only had make-up on on the right side of my face...

The traffic on the way home was horrible. This is what it looked like as Mr. He was trying to turn left onto our street. Fun, huh??

Tanner's School Trip

Tanner left for Xi'an on Monday. Every year, from 5th grade up, the students go on an adventure in China. The 6th grade class goes to Xi'an for 5 days - 5 really long days, for Mom that is! He was a bit nervous but at the same time excited to embark on this journey. These trips are meant to give the kids a bit more of a taste of China. He was very excited that he was able to room with his best friend Adam and another friend Sean. He called on Monday to let me know he arrived safely & was having a good time. Another e-mail came through today, from a 6th grade teacher, saying that everyone is having a great time & they had a chance to see the Terra Cotta Warriors, Wild Goose Pagoda & much more exciting pieces of China. The kids were not allowed to bring their cell phones - it has been weird not hearing his voice daily! I will have him blog on his trip when he returns. He also took our camera so he will be able to post a few of his favorite pictures. 3 more days until he is home!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Princess Bash

As Amanda puts it, "I had a Princess Bash for my 6th birthday!" Trying to plan a Princess bash with no Target, Michael's or even a good party store it tough but somehow (I'll tell you how...with a lot of stress, running around & "creativity") we pulled it off! She invited 10 girls & told them to dress like a 'Princess'. Amanda was dressed as Sleeping Beauty (thanks Dona)! The party was on Friday night at Vizcaya's Ballroom. Mrs. Wang, our Ayi, helped me decorate prior to the party & even ran with me to pick out flowers, last minute, as I felt we needed a bit more pink in the room! We hired someone to draw caricatures of the girls and someone to organize games for the girls. Everyone had a blast! I sighed as the party wrapped up - knowing that she had a good time along with all the other girls was a relief! I never realized how difficult planning a party here would be when you don't have access to things/places you are used to, combined with the fact that Amanda had a specific plan in mind for how she wanted her party!! She even challenged me more as she told me that she didn't want cake, however an ice cream cake would work....great! I was able, painfully though with the very limited Chinese I know & the not-so-good English they know - think charades, to order a Haagen Dazs ice cream cake.....for the low, low price of $70!!! We all REALLY enjoyed & savored every mouthful! I will leave you with a few pictures of the festivities!
P.S. The lady with Amanda is our Ayi, Mrs. Wang - her long overdue debut!!
